Nights

Still

I mostly live in the dark. Our house shuts down as she falls asleep. I'm only home a few hours before it happens. It helps, since I often wake at 5am. Sometimes earlier, depending on if she cries out.

Giraffes sleep the least with 1.9 hours on average[1]. We have lots of giraffes in the house. I always liked the elephant, too. It doesn't fair much better. What do they do, out on the savannah, in the still of the African night? I wonder.

When I was young, I would drive out into the hill country. I would turn out the head lights, leaving just the running lights. And stare, up through the windshield, at Texas' night sky, before I felt the next turn coming. I always liked the '68 Mustang. The extra running lights would have made my runs more safe. But the '67, seat belts weren't mandated by law. That was freedom.

Do elephants fly through the night in old cars? Do giraffes? It's the stillness that bothers me. Not too much, but still. The quiet, I'm ok with.
